Metro Atlanta's housing slump has led to a new kind of estate sale: model home liquidations.
"As we're all aware, housing sales are down and developers who aren't selling enough inventory are liquidating the model homes in their subdivisions," said Judy Friedman of Atlanta Antique and Estate Liquidators.
A recent liquidation of three model homes in a Gwinnett County Subdivision offered high end furniture, appliances and accessories for 80 percent off retail. Friedman said the developer had originally spent between $50,000 and $70,000 on furnishings for the models.
She said a sofa sold for $800.00 that originally cost $3500.00
Maggie Smith was on her second trip to the sale. "I got home and decided I needed to come back and get a few more things," she said. "These sales are great. You can't buy stuff retail for anywhere near these prices. I might be back tomorrow," she said.
The best way to find out about liquidation or estate sales is to contact the company and arrange to be put on its mailing list.
